We aim to foster an inclusive environment for people of all races, genders, religions, sexual orientations, creeds, socio-economic statuses, nationalities and abilities.

ABOUT THE SHOW:

Playful Theatre Productions is very pleased to announce open auditions for Groundhog Day: The Musical at Kelsey Theatre, based upon the 1993 film of the same name directed by Harold Ramis and starring Bill Murray and Andie McDowell. By now you know the story: a man tries to capture the excitement of a large rodent predicting the weather, and ends up riding an existential carousel of insurance salesmen, enthusiastic townies, poorly placed puddles, and endless alarm clocks. This is that, but with new songs by Tim Minchin (Matilda: The Musical) and a revised book by original screenwriter Danny Rubin. Playful’s production of Groundhog Day will open the 2024-2025 Kelsey season, and be the show’s area debut.

The cast will consist of 20 -30 actors (all principal roles are adults (18+), but younger actors will be considered for certain ensemble and featured roles).  All roles are open and described in detail below.

We are actively seeking a cast that represents the diversity of our surrounding communities. We will consider actors for all roles regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity or presentation, or body type.

PERFORMANCE DATES:
Friday, September 20 and September 27, 2024 (8pm)
Saturday, September 21 and September 28, 2024 (2pm and 8pm on 9-21 only; 8pm on 9-28)
Sunday, September 22 and September 29, 2024 (2pm)

AUDITION DATES AND TIMES:

Auditions will be held on the Mercer County Community College (MCCC) West Windsor Campus.  Check the Kelsey Theatre sign board for a room location on the day of your audition. MCCC is located at 1200 Old Trenton Rd, West Windsor NJ 08550; for additional information and directions, please visit www.kelseyatmccc.org.

PREPARE:

Actors are asked to prepare one complete song from musical theatre, and to bring sheet music in the desired key.  A rehearsal accompanist will be provided. Given the musical demands of the show, a capella auditions or auditions using pre-recorded accompaniment cannot be considered.

All actors should be prepared to learn and perform a brief dance combination at the initial audition.

Actors are asked to bring a full list of recurring or one-time rehearsal conflicts.  We are happy to construct the rehearsal schedule around reasonable conflicts.

REHEARSALS:

Rehearsals will begin around the weekend of 29 June 2024, and continue approximately three times per week (two weekday evenings and one weekend afternoon, specific days to be determined based on cast availability) until tech week.

CHARACTER INFORMATION:

Please note that ages and gender presentations described below are of the characters, not necessarily of the actors who play them. We will consider a wide range of ages for the three largest roles (Phil, Rita, and Ned), but intend to cast those three roles with actors of similar ages.
